Never in my photographic career would I think this magnificent gig would land so beautifully and unexpectedly on my lap. It is one of those serendipitous happenings that are short of amazing! For the past three years I have been working alongside Florida Atlantic University’s theater and dance department. Their productions have creatively enriched my mind, body, and soul in unmeasurable ways. My camera and I have witnessed intricate set designs, beautiful costume attire, tasteful acting, and profound singing. Nothing can compare to the happiness and utmost thrill I get from running around the audience while waiting for the perfect expression, ensemble of lighting, and appropriate context.
During rehearsals, as I am capturing a scene, I have privately shared tears, laughter, and pure anger behind the lens. What they are so profoundly performing, I am feeling deeply and visually processing as a collection of images. This eccentric bunch and everything that comes with them have enchanted me with welcoming smiles, accepting me as one of their own. I am not entirely sure what will come out of this photographic experience. All I know is that it is no coincidence. I only hope that we get to shoot more enriching performances, where I can instill their hard work, talent, and dedication through endless visual theatrical stories.
