We might say that the body is a map. A contour of mountains and valleys cohesively bound by one seamless undulating line. With time, planes shift and surfaces become smooth or ridged.
It is all a product of change. The human body, much like land or water, never has the same facade. They are both in constant transformation. Sometimes for the best or the worst. We may never know until we see it happening. The magic of such phenomenon as change is that the human body, life, and the physical components of the world hold precious the endless history of all the experiences they are undergoing.
It is no wonder that the outline of the “Isla Del Caribe” (Puerto Rico) residing above Ericka’s elbow is an emblem of where she comes from. During her childhood she lived all over the island leaving a little bit of her essence in each place. Her tattoo is the glue that binds all of her anecdotes as a whole, allowing her to appreciate the beautiful surprises the land has to offer.
At the age of 15, her compass took her a little northwest in the direction of Delray Beach, Florida. High school was the pit stop that granted Ericka the opportunity to experiment with modeling and becoming comfortable with the Fine Art aspect of photography and the fashion world.
As the journey of a teenager ended, life paved her a far more intricate road towards FSU in Orlando. There she had the pleasure of working at Diverse World Fashion; A student run organization resembling a modern collective of creatives that feed ideas and grow from each other. She styled different fashion photoshoots with the goal of always portraying an image from which the audience could relate to and potentially even be inspired to emulate or wear. Her goal when styling was and still is to be that of the common every day person.
Some where between Free People and Vogue, Ericka is far from a conformist. She practices what she loves with persistence and tries to never be in her comfort zone throughout her life. She fervently believes that with one life to live, we should not be wasting it.
Take the roads less traveled. Allow the shifts, the turns, the highways, the bumps, and the bruises. They are all part of your becoming. They encompass your entire transformation; A transformation that is parallel to the one of our ever morphing planet and constant re-invention of our physical body. Like maps, we are never finished products and there is never a final destination. There are always upgrades or downgrades, roads from the past and the presents, as well as, ones that have yet to be recorded, but soon to be noticed.
